Aromé
A food aroma printer which prints 'scratch and sniff' samples, allowing users to smell recipes when browsing.
10 Day Live Project
As part of Loughborough Design School's Live Projects week:  Panasonic flux provided a brief to design a new experience for the home with a physical product at heart.
The Problem
There is also a disinterest in cooking for young adults due to inconvenience and lack of knowledge of dishes As a result, the past year has led to a 60% increase in takeaways and ready mealts. This raises concerns about long term health impacts due to lack of nutrient-rich, healthy diets.
The smell of food has a dramatic impact on the final choice of the dish and can also give them a sample of the 'final reward', whilst reassuring beginner chefs as they cook. This encourages users to look forward to the finished food and the cooking process.
The Concept
Aromé is an at home kitchen appliance for indecisive chefs.
The device uses microencapsulation to 'print' scratch and sniff aroma samples that allow user to smell a recipe before cooking.
The Modelling Process
The product disassembly is modelled on Solidworks, rendered on Keyshot.
Each part is accurately modelled and scaled to represent a realistic part that would be manufactured.
The Technology
Micro-encapsulation is a technique by which solid, liquid or gaseous active ingredients are packaged within a second material for the purpose of shielding the active ingredient from the surrounding environment.
This process is used in "scratch and sniff" and other fragrance products.  A controlled release of the smell avoids olfactory sensory overload if printing multiple samples and cooking in the same room.
Scenario
Aromé is an at home kitchen counter-top appliance. It is used in conjunction with an accompanying app.
Internals
Twist off outer casing to access the internals.
This includes access to replaceable powder aroma cartridges or to top up print paper.
AROMA CARTRIDGES
The 10 aroma cartridges  contain various smell bases which are mixed before the microencapsulation process.
The powder form allows the process to be more streamlined and decreases contamination between smells.
Button
The button is pressed when aroma sample has been selected and uploaded from the accompanying app.
The button is also used in order to set up bluetooth settings.
